How Does A Homeless Person Spend Their Money?

The answer is quite simple: It is none of your business.
I walked downtown today and as usual, there were a number of individuals sitting on the sidewalk. As I was walking towards one man who had a hat resting on the ground, he politely asked the person in front of me for any spare change. This man scoffed at the person sitting on the pavement and boldly stated, “Why? So you can buy alcohol or drugs?”
So what if he did buy a bottle of wine or drugs? I wondered if this man who kept walking had ever been on the street? I wondered if he had ever felt true despair. The bottle of vodka might be just what that man needs to get through that one particularly difficult day.
But here is my main point. For those who do choose to give money, it is essential to remember that when we give something away, it is no longer ours. There are not supposed to be any parameters attached, or rules that dictate what one can or cannot do with their money. Sometimes the deed can become more about ourselves than the very act of giving. The true spirit of giving is to give without expecting anything in return.
The next time that you give, I would challenge you to simply give freely.
